Re: Al Stewart - The Palace Of Versailles

Okay, I'm a little gobsmacked here. The mantra of my engineering career was "The Brilliance of Simplicity". Well, Al Stewart got a lot of mileage from fundamental chord progressions, and Dave Nach turned up the leads to eleven. And somehow, you made both voices available on one guitar, then even mad...

Re: On The Beat - Episode 827 - Weekly Guitar Video News Wrap Up October 31, 2025

The Earle of Salisbury and The Palace of Versailles share that beautiful melody, but I submit to you, sir, that melody was invoked once more in Ennio Morricone's Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso in 1988. Or, all these notes are finally colliding in my brain? It is going to take awhile, but now I need...

Thank You dtaylor! I spent the last four hours trying to grow hair to pull out because I know I heard that tune with a female voice.

And Neil, I would welcome a lesson on Flying Clouds. I even promise to play it with fingers.

Re: On The Beat - Episode 811 - Weekly Guitar Video News Wrap Up June 27, 2025

I think I need to scroll back through the Weekly News videos and pay attention to the lessons embedded within. Today's improv in D was pretty awesome, and I see in my near future attempting some similar exercises. Sorry to hear of the Clan Hogan mini-epidemic. I'm sure the heat and illness put somet...

Re: More Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely

Both of these Roy Orbison lessons are great! But not working on any strumming pieces in a decade, I am fiendishly made aware I am now without the chops to do the bounce. So it's back to Strumming 101 for me, so if you're looking for me, I'll be in the woodshed........ Great lessons - thanks for them...

Re: Maybe I'll Call This "Microtuning"

I started this thread offering a tuning method that seemed to improve the sour D chord, at least for me. I didn't really want to get too far under the hood, but I couldn't leave it alone, and broke out tuners, digital recorders, a dozen guitars, and Audacity. Well, I found the source of the sour D c...

Re: Maybe I'll Call This "Microtuning"

I spent a few hours today making some follow-up observations. Is Equal Temperament really as bad as we think? Math suggests it is not. Just temperament intervals are integer ratios of 4/3 and 5/4. That's 1.333333 and 1.250000. Equal temperament intervals are based on the 12th root of 2, and are 1.33...

RIP Brian Wilson

RIP, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and collaborator of innumerable other musical endeavors. He was widely regarded by his peers as a musical genius. And with his passing, I believe this marks the end of a genre. The last piece I heard him sing was MacArthur Park on Jimmy Webb's album "Still Within ...

Maybe I'll Call This "Microtuning"

On returning to guitar, I really want to play, and not ponder the physics so much. Then Neil did this! https://totallylessons.com/lessons/2957 Neil discussed tuning, harmonics, intonation, and the role of equal temperament in complicating all of those things. He also talked about body resonan...
