Hi Chris, very interesting sound. Looks like an inverted steel drum. I wonder how they are calibrated. I guess the thickness makes the thin sound for the melody or the base drone.

Did you see it live on the street?

Marc

Hi Marc, didn't see it live, Alessandra sent me the link.
They talk about the instrument at around 2:40. Its been around since 2001.

Really cool sounding, Chris! And they do sound like steel drums. I would love to seem them played live, but a video is good too. Thanks for sharing it.

I have a percussionist friend who owns one of these, so I've had a chance to (try) and play it.

They make it look very easy, but it ain't. It needs a precise touch and a lot of control to get those clean ringing sounds...

BTW, they are no longer manufacturing the model shown in the links...

That's SO COOL!

It sounds fantastic and they do make it look so easy.

Until I read David's post I was thinking "I wonder how loud they would sound in an apartment..." :)

Thanks! Fascinating!

M

Yeah, a very cool sounding instrument for sure, Shel. I am impressed that you've seen and played one David!

"played" is putting it very very charitably Chris!
