This is Rap before there was Rap.
Yep, invented by a white guy in London in the 70s: Ian Dury.
Or was it the Monkees with Zilch in the 60's?:

I think it depends upon your definition of rap and what you include in that definition.
If you define rap as homophobic, mysogynistic lyrics that some of it can be, then theres no place of it in this world in my opinion.
If we're going back to what are commonly defined as the originators of this genre, people such as afrika bambaataa, the sugar hill gang and the development fom there to run dmc etc etc, then I think I'd happily class that as music.
There's also the arguement that rap originated a lot earlier than this, was Bo Diddley rapping in a lot of his songs? were the cotton pickers field hollers which are recognised as the foundation of blues music also the foundations of rap music, all depends upon your definitions?

Rap stands for rhythm and poetry and that seems it fit a description of music, no? I'd say it is very much music, but a more primal form that speaks to certain people more than others. Some of Rap is good and some not so good. Some I like. Some speaks like a beautiful ballad and some like random noise. That is like a lot of music in my book.
Suzanne,
Everything you said in defining rap -- primal, speaks to some, not all good, random noise -- is exactly how older generations typically define music intended for younger generations. Looking back on it now, it's hard to believe that people used to refer to Elvis's songs as "jungle music" and his dancing as shockingly sexual in nature. By today's standards, it all seems so benign. Maybe that's how the world will view rap one day.
