Hi Everyone,

We have a new lesson, free for everyone here at Totally Guitars!

I recently mentioned I had been messing around with a progression in D Minor and figured it might be worthy of using it as a Songwriting Collaboration Project. The first video we have just introduces the progression without any melodic ideas, which might be coming soon if folks are interested.

What I have at this point is two 16-measure sections, maybe a verse and a chorus, and I would like you to come up with a melody, and optionally some lyrics. There are downloadable attachments of a chord chart and an mp3 of just the two parts, hopefully.

Enjoy this level 1 lesson!

Brilliant! And thanks for the attachments.

I've just been listening to the country song fragments on a loop the bus, so I have hammer-ons in my head now. But I'm looking forward to getting into this one too.

Thanks Neil!

Thx Neil, wow #3, . ok here goes...

Dm...etc

I'm feeling the rhythm, I'm feeling the beat
I'm hearing the music, the rise and the fall
When we sang together, we played it so sweet
We had the key to it all...

There's a door to the river, and one to the street
A lock and a chain in the hall
We got people for dinner, but this house ain't complete
There's a secret behind every wall

Down by the shoreline, there's a woman in white
I'm thinking of Beeny, and I'm trying to recall
When we went together, was it day or night?
it's cold and you're wearing a shawl

Bridge 1 (Gm section)

One thing's for certain, I ain't been here before
This I can say easily
There's a man at the window, he knows me for sure
But he's not smiling at me...

verse 4 (Dm..)

There's someone behind me, I can feel them go by
But I can't see them at all
Now I look through high windows, there's a hole in the sky
I'm thinking someone might fall

Bridge 2 (Gm..)

One thing's for certain, I ain't been here before
This i can say easily
Every man has a centre, every man has a core
We all find our own way to be free...

Verse 5 (Dm...)

Now some things are simple, and some are discrete
Some things ask a question of us all
When you look through high windows, can you still see me
On the other side of the wall ?...

--------------------------------

I'm thinking knopfler doodling on the playout this time haha
busking version to follow next week / best wishes, david

Evocative lyrics David. I'm really looking forward to hearing you sing them and the extra meaning you give them with your expression.

I'm actually finding that my country song sections are waaaaay too organic. I'm playing bits that are 4, 5 and 6 bars long...7 bars...9 bars ... lots of odd numbers... I'm having to rethink them so they collectively turn into 8 or 12 bar sections that I can then pull into a song structure. I'm going slowly, so while I still intend to upload some sort of song for #2, it won't be tomorrow.

While you may want to wear a hat to set the mood, I reckon you don't need a sombrero to act as your proverbial shield anymore now that you've revealed your cool playing and singing skills. :)
I, however, may need to borrow it if I can't get my act together. :)

M

Thx Willem, Shel.

You can certainly borrow the hat Shel... i've recorded a version of this new one without the hat that i reckon i'm about 75% ok with... i'll try it again plus hat in the morning. if it makes no difference it is yours.

Haha! Good one!

Hat, sans hat, looking forward to it either way. :)
