Today's TARGET Lesson has an interesting history. Neil was very

surprised and impressed with this recent Tom Petty song, I Should Have
Known It, and Matt also ran across a teaching competition going on at
Ovation Guitars. Matt suggested he enter..

He put together a short lesson on the song and entered the contest with it. For some unknown reason Ovation chose not to publish the entry so we are bringing it out for our members.

Neil's lesson combines a couple of guitar parts into one that is done in a G6 tuning, lowering the 5th and 6th strings 1 step. It is a great example of a solid riff-based tune framed in a modified 12-bar blues format.

It is a Level 5 song , hope you enjoy it ..

Cheers

Matt

On the TP vid at 1.23 you can see a nice Vox Tear-drop same as Brian Jones and same as my very first guitar

Hey Gang,

Calm down, I was just trying to win a guitar (well, at least an Ovation) and figured it would take a cheap shot, maybe even a little below the belt. But alas, they missed the point, or the joke, and disavowed any knowledge of my entry. Now I am even more convinced that many great artists are really just figments of someone's imagination or delusions.

Neil

...and we were going to make that Ovation a prize here at TG for an upcoming contest...

Steamroller of a lesson, Neil !

The people at Ovation must have swallowed the gum they were chewing.

I actually bought that new Tom Petty album (MOJO) in July, for listening during longer vacation driving.

His previous album (Highway Companion) was more accessible and hit like greased lightning.

I find that this new, blues-based album needs more "listens" before really hitting home.

Glad that this tune grabbed your ear right off the bat ... give Tom some more slack in the future?

Thanks for this !

Pierre

Probably would have had a better chance of getting posted if you posted an Al Di Meola tune - - taught on a re-issue Adamas 1687. :-)
