Muriel Anderson Workshop 14 -- Japanese Technique

In her studies, Muriel looked at some Japanese music and began to emulate a Koto, a traditional Japanese musical instrument. She must have done a good job -- while performing in a hotel, a Japanese businessman thanked her for playing his country's music.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 15 -- More Harmonics

Muriel discusses additional techniques involving harmonics. Most notable are touching the harmonic point with the index finger and plucking with the thumb. Muriel shows how to play any note as a harmonic, even chords.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 16 -- View from Space

This song was originally written for a video of a view from space. It makes extensive use of harmonics for an other worldly feel.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 17 -- The Harp Guitar

Muriel intended to have a harp guitar at the workshop but transit problems prevented it from arriving. She discusses the harp guitar with it's extra bass string and how she uses it in her songs.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 18 -- Hand Position and Tremelo

A classical technique, producing good tremolo requires good hand position -- and a lot of practice.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 19 -- Steel String vs Nylon

While steel strings produce a brighter sound, the drawback is that they are harder on finger nails and require greater pressure and are harder on the hands. Muriel feels that nylon strings give her a wider range of tonality.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 20 -- Questions from the Audience

Muriel and the audience discuss music topics

Muriel Anderson Workshop 21 -- "Silent Night" C Wahine Tuning and Harmonics

Muriel uses a C wahine slack key to play "Silent Night." This song makes extensive use of harmonics to reflect the sounds Muriel hears in nature.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 22 -- Life on the Road

As a touring musician, Muriel has many 'on the road' stories. One time, she met Jimmy Page and they passed the guitar playing songs to only themselves.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 23 -- Malagueña

A classical staple, Malagueña a good song to teach several classical techniques. The results can be impressive for a relatively easy song to play.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 24 -- More Life on the Road

At one time Muriel played at a hotel, 7 nights a week, 5 hours a night. Getting paid to practice, she embraced various styles to play songs that inspired her.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 25 -- Website and Day Tripper

Muriel talks about her website and the material available. She also tells about using the Beatles "Day Tripper" as an exercise in the for junior high students in the UK.

Muriel Anderson Workshop 26 -- "Liberty Bell" John Philip Sousa March

Many folks will recognize "Liberty Bell" as the theme from the Monty Python TV program. A John Philip Sousa March, this song holds very good memories for Muriel. Her grandfather played saxophone in the Sousa band.
