Just watching Still Bill, a film on BBC about Bill Withers.... really recommend it!
His grandfather was a slave and he recounts being the only 2 black families on his street (back waters of W. Virginia) and how the kids integrated the neighbourhood... and then he said "anyway, down the coal mine, every one was black by the time they came up"! Did you know he was a stutterer and didn't own a guitar til 1970...this is one man who went his own way.
... and he stayed at home with the kids when they were born... my kind of guy .
