Hi Everyone,

Today's Target members only lesson is a new Fly On The Wall.

As many of you know, Lynn makes occasional visits to Northern California and comes in for a lesson when she can. This lesson started with a short review of what she had been doing lately, mainly playing along with fiddle tunes, and recently getting hooked by Daydream Believer. Her husband noticed a similarity between the Monkees’ song and our recently released lesson on O Come All Ye Faithful.

She had started working out her own arrangement in Dropped D Tuning using ideas from Daydream Believer, mostly harmonizing the melody before turning it into a fingerpicking tune with alternate bass. We touched on artificial harmonic techniques as used and taught by Muriel Anderson at the IGC, right hand position and technique (including a story about how I had to change mine completely after about 10 years of playing), and then talked about basic 2-part harmony ideas.

Burnin’ For You by Blue Oyster Cult came up as an example of its use in rock songs. We then talked about how thirds can be played on adjacent strings, and how they’re used in songs like Brown Eyed Girl and Margaritaville.

Later in the lesson we talked about intervals and how to recognize them on the staff, a review and comparison of key signatures and scales, common keys that guitar players use, before touching on playing Daydream Believer and a few other Monkees’ tunes.

American Woman even entered the picture before we worked a bit on fingerpicking Daydream Believer. We ended with a bunch of Monkees trivia and how many people felt like they had to keep their fondness for the Monkees a secret.

Enjoy!
