Hi Everyone,

Today's Target and Pay Per Lesson release is now live.

Whodunit? is a ragtime instrumental I wrote in 2000. It started out as a somewhat bluesy piece and I was trying to write an intermediate level piece that some of my students could play. Mission accomplished as far as the first eight measures, but then the tune took on a life of its own and a jazzy, walking bass section materialized.

So it became an advanced instrumental and a piece I opened many concerts with for a few years. If you take it in small doses, and allow much more time for the walking bass section, you will find yourself with a very fun piece to play and perform.

I was just sitting here thinking that I wished I had something new to work on. I've been a bit of a "funk" lately, and was looking for a new challenge. Here we go!

So 1, 3, and flat 7 = B7 (ignoring the 5th which isn't essential)

b6 = 13th as an octave extension

I think when a chord uses the term 13th they are normally in the chord too?

So would it be more correct to call it

I came across this Chord Namer application.

It's cool but some of the suggested chord names have me puzzled. :S :ohmy:

B Augmented 7th ( B+7 )
How can that be correct when the 7th scale degree (A#) is flattened = A natural
Isn't that a dimminished scenario ?

A# augmented would be A## ? It can't be B, because B is the root note of B Major scale.

So I'm sticking with B7 Add b13, or, B7#5. ( see earlier post).

Maybe you could explain again why in your opinion one name would be preferred over the other.

Anyone else out there care to chip in their two cents ?

I'm no chord wizard but could it be that the 7th is not being augmented, but that the B chord is being "augmented" (ie the 5th of B is being augmented: F# -> G)? And the 7th (the A) is also being played.

B7#5 = Augmented 5th , and the flatted 7th (A) makes it Dominant..... I think.

Chord Namer suggests B+7 = B Augmented 7th
I see what you mean B Augmented = B Augmented 5th + 7 (raised 7th )

Yep, once again, I've tackled something my fingers won't do. Well back to the drawing board I guess.
