Hi Everyone,

We have a new lesson, free for everyone here at Totally Guitars!

Continuing along the lines of what we did last week with Collaboration #1, I struck out in a different direction here, heading more into a folk or country vein.

Balancing lines and phrases is important in songwriting and the progression I improvised here used just chords I, IV, and V in the key of G, along with a secondary dominant to close the first half on the dominant chord (D). At about 4:00 in I played with melody lines so if you want to try your own stop there. Otherwise, take my melody and craft some lyrics. At the end I even offered a suggestion of an opening line that you could use, or not.

Enjoy this level 1 lesson!

Time to kick this off then...

Country Trope #2

Walking down that road heading out for
somewhere i've never been
gonna find that far distant mountain
going where the air is fresh and clean

Goodbye daddy
goodbye mama
say goodbye to Auntie May
give my clothes to the Salvation Army
what i need for, i'll get on the way
-----------------------------

Last year my friend Billy got married to Suzy
but that wasn't quite so unique
Brother John and Cindy, Terry and Lucy
If i stay it'll be my turn next week

Goodbye daddy, goodbye mama
say goodbye to Marilee
Now I'm walking down that road heading somewhere
I'm joining the band of the free
-----------------------------------

Snow's been deep thoughout these last winters
couldn't see no light up in the sky
all the things that the Lord never sent us
maybe they'll be here by and by

Goodbye daddy, goodbye mama
say farewell to Peggy Sue
all my friends and my own true relations
i'm heading down that road for something new,
but I'll see you all next time I'm passing through

nb final verse has 4 extra bars on D before return to G at the end.. my attempt at a Kistofferson ending.
seeya soon, David

Gosh David, you're a natural born lyricist. I haven't heard the music yet, but this lyrics tell a good story.

Neil,

I just wanted to let you know that this songwriting/collaboration series is a cool idea. It's great being able to see the sorts of things you think about when you develop a progression and then enhance it.

I'd love to join in and I will at some point, but I'm a bit time poor at the moment. I'll be studying it once I get the chance.

As per the And Winter Glows challenge, if you're able to, it would be useful if you could post a version of the audio (the progression section at least) from your video that we can download and listen to on a loop. We could then come up with lyrics, accompanying fragments of music, basslines and melodies. Obviously we can record the progression ourselves once we learn it. But, it would fast track that process a little if it doesn't add to your workload.

Thanks.

Michele

David, That was GREAT! You definitely have to upload a video of you singing this.

Thx for kind comments Michele and Daryl. i think one of the hardest parts in this challenge is hitting the submit button so your encouragement means a lot to me.

I promise to sing it if i make it to camp this year. If Neil keeps churning these melodies out then we'll have quite a repertoire between us all by then.

Yes, but you could take some of that sadness away. :-)
