Hi everyone,
We have a new Target members exclusive lesson for today, Stealing with Ed.
Stealing is an early Leo Kottke song that borrows significantly from many other generic fingerpicking
songs. Ed has used it as a warm up song for years, meaning it has morphed into something that has
taken on a life of its own.
In this lesson we break down the rhythm of the two main parts, which was a bit of a mystery to Ed when
we started. We also talk about ‘square’ phrasing and bring in John Renbourn’s song Judy as an example
of how the player can choose to make things square or not. We also touch on oddities in my piece
Sleight Of Hand.
Leo’s version of Stealing can be heard on Mudlark. His live version from My Feet Are Smiling is quite
different, showing how these things can evolve over time.
Enjoy this new lesson!
