Hi everyone,
Today's Target and Pay Per Lesson release is now live, Outlander Theme – The Skye Boat Song
Guitar Arrangement by Neil.
The popular TV series Outlander features a haunting theme song, The Skye Boat Song, a very
old Gaelic melody with a couple sets of lyrics written for it in the 19th century.
This lesson goes a bit into the history, talks about common chord inversions, fingerpicking in
3/4 time, how to get an old Celtic sound with hollow chords like the droning of bagpipes, then
even a few ways of combining a simple melody with basic chords and shapes to create your own
arrangement.
We really just work with a lead sheet, containing only the melody and the chords, rather than a
complete tabbed out arrangement, at least for the time being depending on some reactions from
folks who choose to tackle this cool piece.
Enjoy this level 6 lesson!

You've made an interesting lesson out of The Skye Boat Song.
Oddly enough, I'm always whistling it and didn't realise what it was !!
The practical explanation of inversions is great, thanks
Can you spoil us with tab too?
:cheer:
Thanks

Hello Neil,
I don't watch a lot of TV and I guess that might be why I haven't heard of this show.? Regardless, I do like Celtic music and this one in 3/4 time signature will be going onto my "to do" list. It might take a while because it seems to have several intricate sections / parts. IDK, maybe it won't be that bad once I get started on it.
Thank you for another great lesson!

I started working on Outlander it's fun trying to piece it together.
Outlanders not for the faint hearted.
Here's a link to the composer Bear McCreary
Tab would be nice too.

This is so cool, and timely!
My wife got me started reading the original novels some time ago, and since it’s become a television show we watch it together and both enjoy it very much. I adore the theme song of the show, and didn’t know the history behind the melody. Fascinating stuff!
It also resonates a bit more strongly with me these days since my dad (who was adopted) researched his biological family tree and, as it turns out, is largely Scots in ancestry. So, between a Scot for a dad and a German for a mom is it any wonder I’m so into good craft brews and single malts? :silly:
Have to add this tune to my learn list.

The Skye Boat Song  theme tune is the best thing of the series.

As usual, all could have been told in two episodes without the grossness.
The Skip forward button's always handy, or give it a miss altogether !
Maybe just learn The Skye Boat Song theme tume, it's the only memorable thing.
