Don't want to hoist the Jolly Roger, just make a little aside comment: Songs that I've never wanted to play would be Blowing in the Wind, Stairway to Heaven and Lady in Black...
That's just Blasphemy!

.... you mean Stairway Barb? I love the song, just never felt the need to play it. I believe its THE pain-in-the-ass piece for everyone who works in a guitar shop. Every spotty youth who has ever tried a guitar out has played THAT song... :-) No offence intended!

Chris- you liked my Jolly Roger reference? Well, since you've alrady hoisted it I think it was the guitar shop in Wayne's World that had the sign on the wall, "No Stairway". Cracked me up!

My first song was HRS, with As Tears Go By and Play With Fire by the Stones close behind!
Sunshine of Your Love my first true electric rock song to play! I still love Cream!

Even though Stairway to Heaven is quite advanced for a beginner, it was an opportunity rather than a choice. When I first started playing guitar, I was in college in a residence with 35 people. Out of 35, 25 were playing guitar at different level. That was in 70' and Stairway was "the" song to play. So it took me a year learning little bits and pieces at the time. I actually learn a few more things from Neil in the program, so I think now I have it pretty well (less the solo unfortunately but I am working on the scales to eventually do it).

Chris,

I am curious about why you do not want to play it: is it because it is too popular and you make a point not follow the hord?

I would like to see Neil and Matt join on this one. I'm curious what the first songs Neil learned.

In the last webinar, Neil made mention of "Sugar Mountain". I surely remember learning that song and playing it over and over and over. It's nice to know that after all of these years, I can still clear a room with my guitar playing.

Yeah, everyone was trying to be flashy by playing it (and not pulling it off) and as it is such a monumental song, it should either be done really well or just left alone. But you just heard so many crap attempts at it. It's like If You Could Read My Mind, such a beautiful song I can't bear to hear it played almost well. I'm losing that attitude a little as I become more patient with myself and my own learning.

I owe all my success to those many years of Classical Tambourine lessons. :silly:
