Excuse the question if it's obvious, or has been explained elsewhere- but what are the 'Karma icons' that I see in forum postings- and how do they work? I'm assuming it has to do with people helping other people on the site?
Also, what's a CHILD board?
General question
other users can increase or decrease your karma level. i guess if someone feels your post was helpful they'll kick the thumbs up icon and if they din't like your post they could click the thumbs down icon.
it looks like a child board is just a sub category.

Spags was absolutely correct.
Forum Karma is a general point system which gives a rough indication of a users activity and community contribution. Users who create many useful posts will have more "karma" points than those who post occasionally.
Child boards are simply the "children" of "parent" boards, or categorized sub-topics of particular forum topic.
