beginners strumming question

I have watched Neils beginners strumming video several times. When i do it it does not sound the same. Is he using the backs of his fingers to strum down With his fingernails. Hope i posted this to the right spot. Thanks Jim

Hi Jim,

It's been a awhile since I watched that lesson, but I think the answer to your question is yes. When strumming down, start at the top of the stroke with your first finger extended, and your second and third fingers folded in toward your palm. As you stroke downward, snap those two middle fingers out straight letting the top of your fingernails contact the strings. On the up stroke, drag just your first finger up letting the pad and tip of your fingernail touch the strings.

If your down stroke sound was weak, I would guess the outward snap of the two middle fingers was too slow.
