Nesh,

Andy is referring to the song 'I Am Woman'. Here are the lyrics.

I Am Woman - Helen Reddy

I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

CHORUS
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

CHORUS

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

FADE
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

LMBO!
The Helen Reddy comment was supposed to engender a laugh or two/to/too....
And here I am dating myself by even knowing that one.

I do change pronouns in some songs. Not always though. I guess it depends on what the song is about more than anything.

And no, sorry, I don't sing or play I Am Woman. Although I Am A Man might be in the cards far down the line... LOL

I do not sing, no problem with the pronouns.

Great topic. The only song currently on my “can do” list where this becomes an issue is “Amelia” by Joni Mitchell. I usually change the pronouns when I do the song, but this admittedly feels somewhat awkward, if not improper.

One particular line of the song, “I wish that he were here tonight, it’s so hard to obey his sad request of me to kindly stay away” kind of takes on a different meaning when sung by a man (regardless of the pronouns used) - the singer almost comes off as a bit of a stalker, whereas in Joni’s original, it’s nothing like that. I don’t know if that says more about me or about society in general in regards to perceived gender roles.

Maybe the best approach would be to keep my mouth shut and just make a chord solo out of it - that way, I only risk offending people with my guitar playing, which I’m used to ;)

I totally forgot that 4+20, the song that I posted last week, is actually a very good example...second line: 'the son of a woman' etc...and later 'where is my woman, can I bring her home' etc. I did think about it for a second, but it was no option to change the words, so eventually I've not given it much thought and I have the feeling that all of you didn't either, or I am wrong??
