Hi ccrazy, welcome to the forum from Montreal Canada, as I noticed it is your first post on it.

Hi Crazy! Welcome to TG and Target from Portland, Oregon. Most modern folk and rock music is built around the I-IV-V chord constructions so I assume you aren't looking for that as a composition technique?

What I believe you are asking about are Intervals and Modes. Go to the Target section and do a search for "Intervals" and you should find Neil's outstanding lesson on Chord Construction. Here's the link if it helps: http://www.totallyguitars.com/target-so ... nstruction.
