I have been a nail biter for ever, but now I have been growing my nails. How short for the left hand and how long for the right hand.
How much fuss do you guys put into it?

From a former nail biter, I feel your pain......lol

I am a lefty, so reverse of what you are thinking. My right hand I keep very short all the time so it is easier to fret with. My left hand, that is another story all together. I have been fumbling around trying to find the right length and shape. I found a pdf on the web that came from a book called "Pumping Nylon". It shows some pretty good nail care pictures. Breaks the nails down into the three major types, and how to address each type. If I had my laptop with me right now, I would forward it to you. It may not be perfect, but I found it pretty helpful. I'll see if I can dredge it up tomorrow....

this may sound wierd, but have you ever let them grow before?

If yes, then, did they break easily?

The answer to that may be a short answer to your question.

yes, keep them short, they'll break while playing and cause you grief.

if no, you'll have to maintain them, with emory boards and such.

shape and contour, will be up to you and your playing style, what feels and works the best.

Then I would suggest rounded, as you won't be "point loading" all the
percusive pressure on brittle nails. File them so they are blunted, not pointy, and catching on the strings.
