Hi

I am learning the C scale and I can say each note as I play them CDEFGABC and going back up I can say each note I play CBAGFEDC Neil then says I should give each note a number C =1 D =2 E =3 F =4 G =5 A =6 B =7 C = 8 My question is . When I go back up should I number each note , 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 . As in 12345678 CDEFGABC 87654321 CBAGFEDC.

Not having seen that lesson....I'm assuming once you've assigned a note a number, that's its value so you wouldn't change it.

yes as others have said - keep the numbers the same.

These numbers are important because thet are the scale degrees.
These are used in a lot of different places.

So if someone says - play a 1 4 5 in the key of C, this means play chords C F and G

If you use 1 3 5 in the scale you get the notes that make up that chord.

Dancer,
Those numbers are called 'Nashville Numbering' and are used a great deal in music. Knowing and understanding how and why they are used will give you a much deeper understanding of theory. It also makes it much easier to change keys.
