I've noticed when trying to play along with the videos to Mrs Robinson on Youtube that I'm sharp (or the recording is flat). Is this just a feature of the playback/recording which affects pitch or am I nuts??

Well I used this recording:

And to play along you have to capo it on the 3th fret and then it's still slíghtly out of tune....I guess that's due to the playback/recording wich sometimes affects pitch.

However, it comes close.

btw....no you're not getting nuts! :P

Thanks Ness, it seems as if all the recordings are the same, just going by ear and then checking with a tuner it seems to be a quarter step flat.
I wonder if this is true of a lot of youtube recording?

I think quite a lot of older recordings aren't tunned to concert pitch.

They just used to tune up their instruments and start recording.

Dean I've had the same thing with some Beatles songs on vinyl ... about a 1/4 out.

I don't know how true this rumor is, but I have heard (long ago, don't remember from what source - hence the term "rumor") that on old albums they had a practice of either speeding up or slowing down the entire album to meet the total minutes requirements for the album.
