I watched Neil Hogan's lesson on You Tube about the into.

I get the part about the pinching the three strings and the D, G, EM 7 and A Sus suspension. However, when I listen to the into I hear finger picking
as well. Can anybody help me with what he's doing there?

Disclaimer: I can't find a lesson for Carolina in My Mind but if there is one, I'd love to take that.

If you post a video of yourself playing it, we will be happy to help out.

Hey budnollie,

Welcome to TotallyGuitars. I don't see a full lesson on Carolina In My Mind, however, it is currently has second place in the recommend a lesson area for songs that haven't already been made into TARGET lessons. Interestingly enough, another James Taylor song (You've Got A Friend) is in the first place position. You can add your vote to Carolina . . . . . here:

http://www.totallyguitars.com/song-voti ... -mind.html

You can find out about other James Taylor songs on the site here:

http://www.totallyguitars.com/target-so ... aylor.html

Some of these are TARGET program songs and are available for a fee. I think they have links on the page where you can purchase them.

Sorry, can't help you with the picking part of the song. If it becomes a lesson, your questions will probably be answered there. In the meantime, many of James Taylor's picking styles are similar, so you may get some clues to what's going on from some of the other TotallyGuitars JT song lessons here and on YouTube.

Hope this helps,
Hydroman52

Hello Budnollie and welcome to TG. Its good to have you with us.

I will try to help if I can. This is how I learned to play the 'Greatest Hits' version of "Carolina In My Mind". I learned this a LOOOONG time ago from just listening and watching JT play it. IF and WHEN Neil does a lesson on this, erase, erase, erase. I am sure he will play and teach it differently.

(Capo on 2nd fret) You will have to figure out and add your own JT embellishments. I am far too lazy to write out a TAB.

Intro:

D (hammer on 1st string, 2nd fret) , G5, G5/F#, Em7 (** 1st and 2nd string, 3rd fret only), A7sus4
D, G5, G5/F#, Em7(**), A

Chorus:

D, G, G5/F#, Em7 (**), A
G5, A, Em7(normal), A
D, D/C#, Bm7, Bm7/A, G, D/F#, E, A
D, Bm, Em, A, D

Verse:

D, C, G5, A, A#dim
Bm, G5, A
G, D/F#, Bm, E, E, Asus7, A7
D, Bm, Em7, A7, D

Yes sir, Willem, 4/4 time and about 80 - 84 bpm. To do a video, I would have to save my pennies and buy a video camera. :) :side: :)

I have a very old phone, Willem. The only camera on it is a STILL camera and I don't use it either. I expect this 'video fad' will pass soon enough. :) :)

This thread got me interested, being a big JT fan, so I went out to find one of the free guitar charts out there on the web. Clearly, its simplified, and a bit simpler than the chart Bill posted above. Also, it doesn't reveal all the various JT finger-style magic, but I played along with the (better known) Greatest Hits version of the song using this chart and it works well. It also includes the bridge, as well as some mini-tabs for a couple of the signature bits of JT flourish and baseline runs. Hope this helps.

Carolina In My Mind

Standard tuning, capo on the 2nd fret

The hook based on a D with Dsus2:

The chord run:

-----4---2---0-----------------------|
