Use of modes

Hi All,

I am trying to get my head around modes theory. Have got the basics i.e. the names, patterns etc.

Now the application of the theory (the difficult bit)

An example.

I have the following chord progression Gm Am C Gm

So, I must be in the scale of F, but my tonal centre is G,
therefore for the melody or licks etc. I should be using G-Dorian.

Is my assumption correct?

Steve

I'm pretty hazy on modal theory but I would say that you are correct.

One part of yourterminology isn't quite right.

You should say that you are in the key of F (not the scale of F).
You would use the F major scale but centered on G - or in other words as you say G Dorian Scale.

Sorry, I'm confused on this. "Gm Am C Gm" It's call F scale? I thought this is G?
