I've said it before, I'm not Neil's best student. I spend most of my time in the TG classroom in the back row singing away to myself songs I'm fascinated by and trying this and that... anything to avoid the pain of actually learning theory. And so I muddle through... until I come upon a song I REALLY want to be able to play (sing) and when its not a TG lesson I have to do it the hard way... working it out myself. That's ok, I can do quite a lot of simple stuff but I am also easily stumped too.

So I was innocently tinkering with a Moody Blues song (surprise!) When You Wake Up, off the Blue Jays album, Hayward & Lodge 1975. I could only find one chord version with very inaccurate lyrics so I was not confident of the chords but it did help until I came across AaddB which sounds lovely on the record but I was not exactly sure how to finger it. If you were counting, that's 140 versions of an A chord... and AaddB is not there!!! :woohoo: :silly:

Ok, I now know AaddB is really A(add9) and I found how to finger it nicely too moving from A to A(add9)... so all good so far... unless I got it wrong??!

I'm not much of a theorist either but have you tried (using your naming method) x 2 2 2 2 0 - a standard A with an added B in the bass, Not sure if it's on your list, I gave up half way through them!

I've certainly been wrong before BUT... your solution definitely sounds plausible to me. Does it sound correct in the context of the tune?

Or you can go with x02420 (xAEBC#E) which is how it's fingered in Riverman. It's a nice sounding chord.


Actually in RiverMan it's 002420 (but I presume that's really a Aadd9/E.

Yes, looked at that B in the bass first Stuart but didn't sound like what I was looking for. The 002420 Shell mentions was the first thing I tried and sounded really nice but not right (and the fingering is hard if you have to go from A) but the solution I came up with x07600 did sound right Cori and as I needed to go from A to A (addB) I could finger x07655 to x07600 very nicely.

I will continue with the mysteries of this beautiful song and maybe come back and ask for help if I can't work it out. This was sparked off by your What Song Would You Request thread Cori so thanks for the inspiration.... I found myself trying to work it out instead of asking for a lesson.

I was just about to edit my response to say if x07600 works from your A go with that. (002420 would be shifting too much).

If it sounds good and it works with the surrounding chords you've go it

Thanks Shell... it does sound nice but I'm not sure its what they are doing... am wondering if they are capoed and using other chords (Cs and Gs instead of Ds and As) or if its alternate tuning.

-Timing... is it changing signature from verse to chorus?
-What's the strum pattern?
-What's the tuning, chords

I'd really like to catch as much of the original as I can...

Here are a couple of thoughts...that MIGHT be useful.

If the Aadd9 were the correct chord
The notes you need are some fingering of: A,E,C#, and B

I like Michele's fingering of the chord but it sounds like you wanna play this further up the neck. I like your guitarist friendly approach of fingering it in fifth position...I believe you said you have been using X76000 but what you need is actually X77600...giving you the four notes: A,E,C#,B

EDIT: But as I RE-READ I see you didn't think the A, E,B,C# sounded correct...


EDIT: But this is all onlyIF we believe the Aadd9 is the correct sounding chord

I would do just like you are doing and play mostly barres in fifth position. The easiest solution is to indeed fret X77600...sits nicely under the A chord...and allows easy access to the D barre chord as well.

Another fifth position fingering of the Aadd9 you might experiment with is to occasionally play the chords on the treble strings. The movement from A to Add9 is a snap and sounds nice as well. It would be a matter of simply dropping your pinky.

A- XX7655 TO Add9-XX7657...getting to the D from here is no sweat either...
