Thirds?

Just wondering what is the big deal with thirds?

Well for starters, chords are constructed by stacking thirds. 
Stack two thirds (a major and a minor one), and you have a major chord. Stack one more on top of that, and you'll have a maj7, and another one on top of that gives you maj9, and another one a maj11 and one more and you got a maj13.
So yeah, they're a big deal.
