Blame it on Al! Somehow he always convinces me to do the exact opposite of what I plan to do. Like with my guitar, for example: Suzi- "I'm not going to buy a new one until I turn 40." Al- "You should buy one now." Suzi- "Ok!" He must have some sort of crazy mind-controlling mojo.

Seriously, though, it means a lot to me to hear you say that, Jay, since your version was what inspired me to learn this song. Mine doesn't hold a candle to yours, but I'm still glad I'm tackling it.

If only I knew about my 'crazy mind-controlling mojo' when I was active in the bar scene!!

(I mean more active)

Hey Suzi, great playing, I think that your concern about your playing was only from your perspective. You did very well. I thought the strumming is quite fluid and there is no pause when you change your chord. For the next step ( as this is the purpose of these videos)I agree with Bear about giving a little bit more emotion. Besides strumming a little harder on the first beat, I would add that if you use a little more of your arm in the stroke rather than just moving your hand it will be easier to give more emphasis when you will see fit. There will also be less fatigue on your hand.

Karma for you

Marc

Thanks, Marc! I appreciate the kind words, but also the constructive criticism. After all, that's one of the main reasons to post a video- to get feedback so that you can improve the song. I'm going to keep plugging away at it, and work more on adding some emphasis to some of those downstrokes. I do like the idea (Al's maybe?) of posting a video of a song in its early stages of development, and then again in a more "complete" stage.

Merci pour tes mots gentils, Marc!

[quote]Hi everyone,

I am posting this at the urging of Al. I sent it to him to get some feedback, and he told me I should just go ahead and post it for everyone to see. As many of you know, I got really frustrated with my attempts to play this song last week and decided to shelve it for a little while. For a level 4 song, it seems pretty darn hard!

Inspired by Michelew, I decided to "unveil" myself; that is, not cut myself off at the neck. On the one hand, it is nice to see people's faces when they're playing. On the other hand, as a player it seems like just one more thing to stress about ("Do I look ugly?" "Do I look fat?" "How's my 'guitar-face'?"). Or maybe that's just my own insecurites getting in the way. I wonder how people like Neil can look so comfortable and natural on film. I'll have to think about what I'll do for the next video.

Anyway, feedback, as always, is very welcome.

HI Suzi good effort, now I might be chancing things a bit here but I disagree with Neil H's tab of this song, and yes Neil Young plays this different near every time but , the tab in itself might throw people off if you try to play a constant 104 bpm and 4/4 time. Neil Young plays a lot of triplets in the intro and the interlude to this song more than in Neil H's tab. This gives the song that fast / slow feel, best I can explain triplets are obviously sounding faster - then the 1/4 notes kick in and it appears to slow. However, you have the song down pretty good for such a short time learning it. This is a song that yes the palm mute is important but the timing and feel i consider more important listen to NY on the tube playing this also if you can find a Massey hall 1971 concert vid this is by far the best version around. I have it on DVD but don't have the tech smarts to copy it for the tube! PLease note this is not saying I can play it better, just that i've listended to NY for a loooong time lol, also in respect to the Neil H version not saying it is wrong but NY does it so differently most occasions e.g. that litle slide is omitted regularly

Good on ya Lassie

yay suzi

If you call that struggling, I can think of many people on here who like to be able to struggle at that level( i hope that made sense  )

It's not a song I recognised, so before I looked at yours I went and watched Neil play it, and I have to say, you've pretty much got it, and in only 10 days, thats impressive, very impressive.

As the Right Reverend Acoustic Al ( lets see how long a nickname we can give him!)said, " we all make flubs!", but its not about the flubs, its about getting the song out there, receiving praise and positive constructive feedback, which you have.

Karma for you for posting this, and good luck with your next song.

Joe

Stratman3- I generally have a hard time focusing on one song (especially as there are so many tempting songs to learn on TG), but I did focus a lot of attention on this song over the past 2 weeks. Because the song sounds so nice, and because it was challenging enough for me (at times TOO challenging, hence my frustration near the end), I was able to focus primarily on it, which meant making progress relatively fast on it. Of course, I'm hyper-critical of myself, and anything that takes me 10 days to learn I think I should have learned in 5 days.

AndyT- Thanks! And I sure do appreciate all the support from fellow TGers. It's what keeps bringing me back!

Willem- Dank je wel! You next!

Chas- Everyone keeps recommending I check out the Massey Hall concert, so I think I'll have to hunt that down this week some time. It's funny, because I barely knew Neil Young before joining TG (just knew 2 or 3 of his songs), and now he's fast becoming one of my favorite artists. I'm already eyeing up Harvest Moon as a possible next song to learn.

Anyway, I think the point you're trying to make is that we shouldn't look at Neil's TAB as a script for a song from which we should never deviate. In my mind, Neil is laying out the building blocks of the song: the rhythm and the contrast between the down- and up-strokes are the heart of the song. Then you have the skeleton: the bass run formed around the D-chord and the bass run in the Esus4. Then you have the embellishments: the bass run in the C-chord with the hammer-ons, the slide, adding hammer-ons and such into the Esus4. You have to preserve the heart and the skeleton of the song, but the embellishments can vary whenever you play it (and probably should!). Hope that makes sense!

Like you, I think I'll be listening to this song for the rest of my life, and I'm sure I'll continue to play it and hopefully improve upon it. It's a gem of a song.

HeyJoe- Finally getting to you! Thanks for your encouraging words! Of course, I didn't post the video where I screw up my hammer-ons or my slide over and over! It is a tricky song for me, but well worth the effort and time. I can't wait to see a video from you!
Thanks for the karma!

Suzi
