Interesting points Marc. After watching Anton's video, I did a little research on my own and found that Ramses Shaffy was actually born in Paris. He not only recorded the song "Laat Me" in Dutch, but there is a version that he recorded in French with the title, "Vivre". As far as I can tell, there are no English translations of the song.

Damn Anton, I'm going to reply in Dutch because you played it very well!:

Heej Anton, jeetje wat heb je dat mooi gespeeld. Ben echt jaloers op je... Weet je misschien een paar makkelijke Nederlandse nummers die ik zou kunnen oefenen om mee te zingen enzo? Bedankt! En blijf ze posten!

this took me a few minutes. The translation of the original song:

Maybe I'm born too late,
Or in an other country with another light,
I always feel a little lost,
Even if the mirror shows my face.
I know the pubs and cathedrals,
From Amsterdam until Maastricht,
Even then I'll get lost every day,
That keeps the case balanced.

Let me be, Let me be, Let me do my thing.
Let me be, Let me be, I've always done it this way.

I won't forget my friends,
Because whom I hold dear I'll hold dear.
And where they live I'd to remember,
but I lost their last letter.
I'll meet them once again,
maybe today or next year.
I'll kiss and greet them,
it'll be all right.

Let me be, Let me be, Let me do my thing.
Let me be, Let me be, I've always done it this way.

Fortunately I didn't change,
sometimes I live here, sometimes I live there.
I haven't cancered my life,
I don't have any possession nor protest.
I love water and of earth,
I love poor and rich.
There is no penny that I collected,
I live from hour till hour.

Let me be, Let me be, Let me do my thing.
Let me be, Let me be, I've always done it this way.

I will also die once,
I won't escape that.
I'll let my songs wander then,
and you can mind your own business then.
For now I remain singer,
your black sheep, your loyal fan.
I'll stay long, even longer,
En let me stay who I am.

Let me be, Let me be, Let me do my thing.
Let me be, Let me be, I've always done it this way.
Let me be, Let me be, Let me be.

Well done, I know this may sound dumb but your voice sounds really different in your own language, deeper, more confident , more feeling, just great in fact.

Cheers

Doesn't sound dumb at all Chas...spot on. Isn't easy to sing in a 2nd language and the confidence level is so much higher here for Anton in his native tongue.

Temo nice job on the translation, thanks for doing that.
