Hello all. Well I had been neglecting the Dred ever since I got that 714 so I decided to take it out and put some nice new strings on it. I had been messing around with this song a while ago and wanted to see if I could still use a pick after all this fingerpicking I've been practicing. I liked a Steve Winwood version (enclosed) so much that I wanted to try and see if I could emulate it a bit. Its in Drop C (Drop D tuned down a full step) I think. Anyway I like the tone. I read somewhere that Taylor Dreds don't give a warm tone. I beg to differ   . I did sing on a seperate track. Not very well I'm afraid. I did just get an M-Audio device that will now let me record vocals as well as guitar at the same time. So last one here with the overdub. As always I thank you in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Mark,

I always like your playing and this is no exception. Not sure what M-Audio you have, but I picked up a M-Audio Firewire solo and I'd be interested how you'll set yours up.

great playing

MarkM I thought this was really cool. I loved this version..and you did a great job I thought. I like this, because at least to me, it is a good composite arrangement for solo guitar. Awesome!

Mark,

I've always loved this song. There's something very melancholic about it that really appeals to me. I think it's partly the bass notes in it, and hearing you say it's in dropped C helps me to understand why maybe those bass notes are so noticeable in this song. Anyway, I thought your version of it was really, really nice. You brought out those bass notes and had absolutely lovely hammer-ons (another signature of this song).

I also think this song is incredibly hard to sing. Not sure many people could do it well. It's VERY high for a guy- or even for most women- and has a kind of indistinct melody. Again, I think that's part of the appeal of the song, for me anyway, but I can see it being a huge challenge to sing.

Anyway, really nice job. I always enjoy your posts, as you know.

Mark I am not familiar with the song but I am fan of Windwood. Listen to his video first and you are doing a great job playing it, Your giutar sounds richer than Windwood.

great post

Thanks All!!

Dennis - Thank you very much for your kind words,

Bob - Thank you. I go the USB version. I think it is similar to what you have. I tried working on the connections but got a bit frustrated with the set up. I'll have to give it another go and get back to you. I still want to get down to MA but I've been travelling so much these past few months. Another trip again next week. I think I'm good after Thanksgiving. I'll let you know.

Bud- Thank you!!! I wish I could sing like you.

Craig - Thank you very much.

Lueders - Thanks. Yeah this version fits pretty well for the solo player. I'd like to see what this would sound like with two guitars.

Suzi - Thank you!! I just love the sound with the full step drop. You can feel the notes go right through you. Boy this was a tough song to sing. I mean they are all tough for me but this one was especially hard. Winwood has an awesome voice.

Marc - Thanks!! Winwood has a smaller guitar that he is playing in his video but still gets an incredible sound. I thought his version is just fantastic. I can't quite get the same notes picked out but maybe with some more practice and watching what it is he's doing will help over time.
