Great point, and very true....

I imagine I will part with a few of mine in the future. I NEVER play the Epiphone, as the frets are a bit on the chunky side for my taste, and it just feel funny. My fender rarely gets any attention either. The only reason I hold on to it, is because it was my first guitar, and the only one I have ever made mods to. Sentimental..... The Martin Backpacker lost out as soon as I bought my Baby Taylor.... I figure if I sell those three, there is lenty of room for the next delivery... That does make it easy to justify. Look, I am getting rid of three, and only buying one, right????....

Willem: That is nice. I looked at this one, when I was shopping for my acoustic amp. It was more than I wanted to spend, so I bought the Loudbox Mini, and love it.

Hello, my name is Cori, and I have G.A.S...well sort of

About a week and a half ago I heard on the radio that a regional music chain is closing it's Champaign-Urbana store. So, in my mind I began to envision all the wonderful deals I would find. Would I get myself that cool hollow-body Telecaster with the nifty F-holes that I wanted for so long? Or, one of the Mondo-Cool Stratocasters with more frets and higher pitches guaranteed to irritate the neighbors? Would I be sneaky and get Krista a black Fender bass for her August birthday? Would I get a fancier amplified uke?

Well, I decided whatever instrument I ended up walking away with it was going to have to be the bargain that just wouldn't and
couldn't be ignored...the offer I couldn't refuse (so to speak) ;)

I'm sure you know what I mean...the most utilitarian choice...the one I could make the best case for...yada yada

Well, long story short...No ukes. No bassses, and a non-sufficiently marked down TELE...at least insufficiently marked down for my present budget $$

But after doing some further reconnaissance...I found the end- all-be- all deal I was looking for. I SAW ONE OF THE MONDO WICKED AWESOME STRATS FOR $133.00

I went to claim my prize and as I was pulling it down from its high above perch I saw that the dangling ticket price actually said: $1333.00 RATS!!!!! Too rich for my blood!

Hi Shel,

You never know where your next flashes of inspiration may come from.

All that matters is that they occur. That is what make life interesting !

From either a musician's or a luthier's point of view (or that of the municipal zoning department),
maybe the following might start some interesting chain reactions ?

WOW! that's crazy looking. I wonder what the guitar will look and sound like in say.... a century from now.

Pierre, I think you've hit the nail on the head - INSPIRATION. If the instruments you're dreaming of owning (and buy) are inspiring and motivating you to actually play and learn more, then that's GOT to be a good thing...RIGHT? OK I'll run that test in future. :) :) :) .. Hmmmmm... Oh, no... I think my GAS devil could actually go a little crazy with that one. :) ;) B)

Good advice Hydro.

I'm already falling into that trap. When I'm working on a project, a fair chunk of my time goes into videoing and fiddling in garageband and iMovie. Does it make me a better player? Hell no!.. But... if I wasn't preparing videos I may not be exploring the other paths to music fun (like making up tracks, including percussion tracks that hit the cutting room floor). Actually, for me it turns out that I do enjoy the technical stuff and the maintenance and learning more about instruments and related paraphernalia in general. SO while I love music (listening, playing and learning) i generally enjoy learning new stuff in general. That can take me off on tangents that have nothing to do with becoming a musician, but it keeps me out of trouble. B)

But you're absolutely right. The extra equipment can take you away from the main game.

Hey Hyrdo, you would mind asking Bassman Jerry whether he has any recommendations for a value for money electric bass (make and model) that's likely to suit someone with my extremely limited experience for a while? And no, I don't know who's style I'd like to emulate, it's a big wide world of possibilities at the moment. If Jerry has advice he'd like to offer, it would be great to know the 'why' as well. Thanks.

Hey Jason,

Tony did exactly the same thing when he purchased his fancy Koa Taylor. He sold three guitars so he could finance a large part of the purchase. I believe he now has an agreement with his wife about the number/value of his collection; basically that if he wants a new one he has to release one. I guess it makes him evaluate the value he's getting out of his guitars. As I understand it, he's been so happy with his beautiful Taylor that other acoustics aren't tempting him like they used to. Mind you.... I suspect he misses the Larrivee (that was one of the three he sold so he could afford the Koa). That was DEFINITELY my gain.

So there's precedence to your approach. :)

Cori I have SO been there. Instruments are expensive here and I often underestimate what I think the price tag will say.
