Ken:

That was really cool! I love that ELP song and have it on my to do list. When Neil gave the lesson, I was sooo happy. You did a great job! The recording and effects sounded good as well. It was great to see you on screen! Nice little area to play and record. I might have missed it, but did you give a run down of your equipment? Mic/Daw/Effects..... nice setup.

Cheers!

Hi MJ,

Thanks for the kind comments. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yep, I’m a big ELP fan and I’m very happy that Neil is a fan of Greg Lake. I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw Neil put up a lesson for “Epitaph” from when GL was singing with King Crimson. SYTMO is definitely worth learning. Have fun with it!

I did mention the effects briefly but not the equipment. I’m using a Sennheiser e835 mike and a Behringer 1202FX mixer in the recording. I don’t use a DAW at all even though I did have Audacity running in the background for something unrelated that I was editing. Normally I use an Acoustic AG15 amp as a monitor but for videos I send the mixer output directly to a camcorders input. It’s amazing how much that suppresses noise. The effects, provided by the mixer, I used were deep chorus and med-short reverb. I do that mostly for vocals but send a bit to the guitar. I love the Behringer FX series mixers. Reverb, gate, delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, pitch shift and of course an equalizer… it’s got it all. I highly recommend their mixers if you have an acoustic electric guitar.

Cori – Thanks for the kind words. That was Greg Lake’s “Still You Turn Me On” so you’re right on the money with it being prog rock. Good ear! Of course I would have preferred that you recognized it! LOL .. but I didn’t play much and it is a bit obscure. Regarding where it’s going next and how to sign up, take a look at the tentative list in the first post in this thread.

My: ear for/ knowledge of, the prog. rock genre is extremely limited...so that is certainly no reflection on your playing, whatsoever.
I have to admit that that is one genre that there is much in which I am unfamiliar.

Anyways, really cool to hear you and see your video.

If you have not taken a dive into the Prog Rock genre before, you really should take the time. There are some REAL hidden gems in there. It never made it big over here in the states for some reason. I didn't know much about it until 4-5 yrs ago and was blown away by some of the cool tunes.

Popular misconception about which guitar he , Greg Lake used primarily for this, many say he used his white Gibson J200 12String whereas he actually used a Zemaitis twelve-string acoustic guitar, not the heart shaped sound- hole 6 used in other songs of the 70's (he disliked that one eventually jumping on it. However, he eventually had a J200 12 string Gibson made in Zemaitis fashion with the heart-shaped sound- hole.

I tried out some Zemaitis guitars in Die Gitarre but didn't really like the way they played nor their sound much... bit extreme jumping on one though... although my very first guitar did come to a similar, stick end!

Here is an update on the continuing saga of the TG Banner World Tour. Suzi mailed it to me on Monday. It arrived on Tuesday. Wednesday evening, Bassman Jerry and I recorded a song we just started working on for the Banner Tour and then we signed the Banner. There’s a video of that, too. Heatndude couldn’t break away for very long, so we arranged to meet and have dinner back in Madison the next evening (Thursday) to do a Banner hand-off. Tonight (Friday), he was planning to shoot his signing video, and then send it on the way to the next member. I had already contacted Marc (Lavallee) for some guidance on which way he would like it to go next. He suggested that we get it back to the east coast and allow it to circulate among the members that were skipped in its brief detour to the mid-west. So, it’s been a whirlwind tour here and the next recipient is Wrench.

The first video that we shot was a song that we decided to tackle a week ago. Jerry had worked up a nice harmonica part and, in order to make room for it, we extended the song by doing the chorus an additional time at the end. In our first take, everything was going surprisingly well when I forgot we were adding the chorus and messed up the ending in a miserable way. So, the following video is our second take for the evening (we didn’t have time to do any more). I had originally thought that we might want to do a more polished song for our Banner posting, but this is probably more appropriate. A video about learning to play a song on a site dedicated to learning to play songs. Here it is . . . .

. . . . and signing . . . . . . . . .

. . . . and the ending that crashed and burned on the first take . . . . .

. . . . and, last but not least, “OUR SECRET IS OUT”, Heatndude takes possession of the Banner.

Heatndude and the TG Banner

Hope you enjoyed it,

Hey Mark,

How about this . . . .

I guess you'll keep us all in suspense on that new Martin of yours. Oh well, all good things come to those who wait.

Welcome to the Banner signing club!
Hi Mark, thanks for introducing us to your house and taking the time to video the signature.

The TG Banner World Tour stopped at wrench's house today. Wrench misspoke in the video, though. He said there were 22 signatures on the banner, but there are really 24. Now let's see if I can get a video to show up here. I haven't posted one in a very long time.

It was very humbling to see how far this thing has traveled, and to see how far it has yet to go. It'll be on the road again tomorrow. And Hydroman52, thanks for the sampler pack. I didn't partake though, in fact, I added a few more!
Hi Dan, great playing for your banner video and even greater philosophical comments which I totally agree with.
