There are at least 4 different ways that I can think of right off.
You can do it like Neil does with your index, middle and ring fingers in a D7 chord like shape except all on the 2nd fret.
You can use your index, middle and ring fingers all in a line on the 2nd fret or middle, ring and pinky fingers all in a line.
Or, you can barre the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings with one finger. I have just recently started doing it this way. I use my ring finger as it then makes it very easy to slide up the fret board for other barre chords. I also find that when I use a capo, especially on the upper fret where they are smaller I don't have to worry about fitting all my fingers in.
The thing is to try different ways and use what feels and works best for you.

Keep Playing

I use different fingerings at differnt times.
My basic one in 1st position would be middle on the 4th string, index on the 3rd string and ring on the 2nd.

I don't think their is a proper way just the way that suits you best or fits with other chord progressions. I mostly use the D7 shape all on the 2nd fret and occasionally use the bar 2,3,4 strings with whichever finger suits the chord progression

My brother barres it with his pinky! Man it makes me cringe it looks so painful but that's his method, I need to try Neils way, never thought of that, I try and do them all in a row and can't cleanly (fat fingers) so I usually barre with my index.
