I'm trying to learn the blues after years off sitting silently while others blasted off on some really cool 12 bar blues songs.

There are literally hundreds of "Learn to Play the Blues" DVD's out there. They run from insultingly basic to Stevie Ray Vaughn and everything in between.

There is no way to know what's good and what's garbage with these DVD's unless I try to buy them all and test them (not that wealthy!). I'm hoping some of you have tried some and found some you liked (or didn't).

Can you guys suggest anything I should try. If I had only one or two DVD's to start what should they be? I'm an intermediate player with 40+ years of playing. I've got the 12 bar patterns down and I can play the pentatonic blues scale in all 5 positions so I don't want a "This is a guitar, it has 6 strings..." DVD. But I ain't Stevie, Jimmy, B.B. or Albert either!

do you like robert johnson? and if so do you slide at all and how do you stand on alternate tuning?

What type of blues? Electric? Acoustic? Fingerstyle? Etc. Are there any blues musicians you like and want to play like?

I would really like to work on some slide guitar blues song. I like Robert Johnson, but also Clapton unplugged. Most of those blues songs are with alternate tuning which sounds fun. Here is a great example:

I don't have a background in the blues so I don't have a real preference. I probably like the "Electric Bluesmen" the most like Robin Trower, Clapton, Hendrix, Vaughn but realize I need to get a good basis is acoustic blues first. The "Kings" are all good too.

Where I'm trying to get to is the company I work for has jam night every month and when someone takes off on a heavy acoustic blues song to be able to at least offer a few licks or do a turnaround or two. Right now I'm pretty intimidated by the speed and intensity of the playing. It's almost like trying to speak a foreign langauge that you don't know.
