Tuning Down

Forum folks, A question please:
In the "Spot the Slip' forum it was mentioned " All 6 strings were tuned down 1 whole step D G C F A D. Neil Young does this commonly for a couple of reasons- sing in a lower key, as well as a richer, deeper sound on the acoustic guitar."

I was hoping some one could tell me how do tune down 1 whole step. I have an el-cheapo Korg tuner, and it tell me if each individual string is correctly tuned to 440, but it does not tell me if the E is sounding a D, or the A sounding a G. How does a person tune down one whole step?

Thanks again

Put a capo on the 2nd fret and use the tuner. Then take the capo off.

Great suggestion. I would add though that a decent chromatic tuner is not very expensive and if you want to explore some different tunings then it would be worth the investment.

The chromatic tuner will tune to any note and tell you which note it is tuned to. So, you can use it for your guitar (any tuning) or a violin or a ukulele or whatever.

Keep Playing

Yeah, Korg makes a cheap chromatic tuner, I think it's the CA-30.
