Not sure if this was mentioned before, if it was, sorry for repeating it.
Somebody suggested me the following to remember the notes on 5th and 6th strings. Simply take any songs and play them as bar only. The root note being either on the 6th string (E shape chords) or on the 5th string (A or Am shape) In my case I need to improve above the fifth fret , so I am using Em, A and Am shape bar chords only from the 7th fret and up and I say the chord name out loud. A couple practice rounds and it is already sinking in. I am using a simple song: Help Bm,G,E,A and chorus: A, C#m, F#m, D,G,A. So any simple song can be used like Wild thing (A,D,E,D, repeat)
Hope it helps
Marc
Suggestion for remembering notes
When I taught my guitar club the natural notes for some people who like associations with phrases I used
For both: E strings Fred Gets A Banana
for the A strings remember your A, B, C's...
for the D strings: Don't Ever Feed Godzilla
for the G string: Girls Always Buy Clothes
for the B string: Bad Charlie Doesn't Eat Fish
Thereafter follow the musical aplphabet to G. INtervals are explained before that however.
