Ha. I knew that thread subject would get you here.

When I first started coming to TG, I posted a link to a Lindsey Buckingham video of him playing Never Goin' Back Again. You can see it right here:

I watched the video again today and noticed something unusual about it: he appears to have plugged up his soundhole. Is there some benefit to doing that when going electric?

Yep. It's called a soundhole plug and it prevents feedback during loud events. Usually made of a semi-soft rubber that snaps into the hole.

Andy,
Is this specific to guitars with internal pickups?

Yes. There is no point to using it if the guitar does not have an internal pickup.

What happens is that as you turn up the volume, the top of the guitar picks up the sound from the amp and starts vibrating to it and you get a building sine wave which ends in ear ripping feedback. The semi-soft rubber helps to deaden the top a bit and blocks sound from coming back in to the pickup.

I've got one it works great for reducing feedback and noise. In Canada they are around twenty bucks.

One brand is called "FeedBack Buster". I've seen some ornate ones as well but not sure what they're made of.
