I wouldn't know what number to give myself and wouldn't want to. I know I'm not as good as I want to be but each day I'm better than I was.

This is a difficult one. There needs to be more identification for each number on the scale.

For example:

2-3 clean barre chord progression
3-4 ability to form major chords in multiple locations
4-5 scales and (modes recognition)
5-6 some ability to work out a song based on hearing alone

These are just some thoughts, very hard to quantify a persons skill without benchmarks.

Personally I've always felt that if you don't have to look at the fretboard while playing a tune, your comfortable with it. Doesn't mean total mastery of the song, just united with the instrument.

Some people figure out 2-3 songs and only play those, play them so much and so well, it would be easy to presume they're an 8, ask them what chords, key, finger pattern, they'll have no clue. TuneMasters, but not Guitarists, per se.

It boils down to what each individual considers difficult.

Can I fingerpick----Yes
barre chord progression---yes
walking baseline work----yes
finger through a song by ear---yes
tell you what key a song is in----no
scales/pentatonic/modes----have some awareness of it only

where do I rate myself, maybe between 2 and 3

WOW !!! I am reading through this thread, trying really hard to put myself on this scale. I was edging towards a 5 until I read what Chas wrote.... then all of a sudden ..... well, the conversation deteriorated... personally I want to be part of the barre chord encouragement group, but don't think my chest figures in significantly. Then smips pipes in and all of a sudden I am a one. So here is my vote - I used to be a 6 but then - 20 years of nothing. So I have 6 capabilities in my brain, and 2 capabilities in my hands. So I am also around 3.14.

I'm sorry Izzy...

Twasn't meant to bring anyone down, I guess I was really trying to emphasize the point of some sort of agreed upon standard. The initializing question was for the Target Program being able to classify songs, and what level they should be listed at. Asking without laying down a foundation, is dicey at best. I can rip through "all of me" jazz song without a hitch, but could I tell you what chords I'm playing, what key the song is in. Nope. That's why I "downgrade" myself.

As I indicated in my intoduce yourself post, I "imprint" songs so well in my head, when I play them, am usually dissatisfied, with my ability.

But that's me.

Part of the reason I became a member was Neils comment about not being so concerned about the recorded version of a song, versus what I'm playing. It's an attitude towards playing, I hadn't seriously considered before.

In a few months, maybe I'll upgrade myself.... :)
