Mandolin anyone?
Hi Mike,
Like a lot of other members, I'm fascinated by the mandolin, but have never actually played one. An interesting Target lesson would be a strong motivator. I very much look forward to following what you have to share on this topic.
And, as Chas mentioned, some guidance on what to look for in purchasing a mandolin would also be most welcome.

Hello Mike,
I am interested in whatever you have to offer. An old friend recently gave me a vintage mandolin banjo. It is currently at a luthier being refurbished. This "free" instrument is going to wind up costing me several hundred $$$ American but he assured me it was worth the money.

Mandolin is one of those instruments where you can't really buy cheap and hope to be enamored. In my experience, forget about anything under $500. I was going to ay forget about anything under $1000, but today I played a Michael Kelly Legacy that was very nice indeed in the warmth department and feel, two things cheap mandolins usually lack.

Hi Eric,
Yep, mandolins tend to be expensive beasts. However, my son bought a Rover RM-75 mandolin for $450 (with HSC) and it has astonishingly good quality for the money. It's a replica of a Gibson F-5 with all solid woods. I have a 1937 Gibson that I'm spoiled by, but I took the Rover overseas with me and was completely happy playing it. I would recommend these to anyone...

Here's a link to me playing a tune on the mandolin so you'll have some idea of what I sound like. It's an old fiddletune called "Bonaparte Crossing The Rhine". Hope you enjoy, and more to come...
