My wife and I fall into the middle territory as well.
She was a first chair clarinet in school, but has basically left the music to
me and the son, and hopefully our grandaughter.
She doesn't mind the playing/learning part nearly as much as the
telltale signs of obsesive behavior on my part, especially while I was repairing
my Martin copy guitar. I have 6 guitars, and only one is "silent".
Funny thing is, she hears so much of it, she doesn't notice improvement as much as others.
More or less she is a really good sport about it all.
