Candle in the Wind - Elton John - About Princess Di
..it was about Marilyn Munroe, of course, but Elton couldn't come up with anything better at short notice when his friend Princess Diana died. I always felt it was a mistake to rewrite it.

When I was a kid, there was a record my Sister played. The tune was "What the World needs now is love" and throughout the tune were references to "Anybody here...seen my old friend". The "old friends" were Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. I loved that record and it made me so sad. I have no idea who put it together, but I will remember it my whole life.
Tony,I think your think of two different songs.

What the world needs now is love sweet love.Bert Bacharach.

Found this on Wikipedia:
The song is also featured on Tom Clay's 1971 "What the World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin, and John", a medley combining Dion's recording with Jackie DeShannon's recording of Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now Is Love", along with vocals by The Blackberries. Clay's recording features narration (an adult asking a child to define several words associated with social unrest), sound bites from speeches given by President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., along with sound bites from the live press coverage of Robert Kennedy's assassination. It reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 1971.

I wish I could find a video of this song sorry guys..I listened to this in my youth and just remembered how pretty and also disturbing it was at that age..

Tim Finn - Suicide On Downing Street from the album Tim Finn

It was no personal defeat,
That suicide on Downing Street,
They found him burning in his car,
He paid the price for what we are.

A stroke of luck, a trick of fate,
The life I build, the mess I make,
Too young to retire, too old to live,
This message all he had to give,

[Chorus]
Derek Bainbridge did not die in vain,
And I will sing his sad luck story,
Desparation is a warning flame,
Now we stand or fall with Derek Bainbridge.

He came 160 miles,
To wipe away all those smug smiles,
The empty hours dragging by,
His spirit withered up inside.

[Chorus]

He felt the man that he could be,
Was only wasted potential.
He went swimming in the deep forbidden sea,
Looking for that extra dimension,
In a selfish blue nation.

It was no personal defeat,
That suicide on Downing Street,
You cannot call us civilized,
As long as one life is denied.

[Chorus]

Swinging on a one-way pendulum,
Driving down a dead end highway,
Desparation is a warning flame,
Now we stand or fall,
Do we stand or fall.

Thanks Kevin. The record I referred to had blended them. It was very powerful.
