What a cool thread Suzi!

When I was a kid, there was a record my Sister played. The tune was "What the World needs now is love" and throughout the tune were references to "Anybody here...seen my old friend". The "old friends" were Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. I loved that record and it made me so sad. I have no idea who put it together, but I will remember it my whole life.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying this topic! Michele, who was Suzy Q written about?

4 of the ones I thought of were mentioned, but this is one that wasn't: John Wayne Gacy, Jr by Sufjan Stevens, a beautiful song with a horrific subject matter:

You're kidding right?.... Just in case you're not... It was Suzi Quattro (of Devil Gate Drive). One of the members of CCWR was crazy about her. Unless I've just made it up of course...

With apologies if they've been mentioned - and stretching the term "Historical Figure" silghtly;

The Hurricane - Bob Dylan
Free Nelson Mandela - Special AKA
Steve McQueen - Prefab Sprout
Robert De Niro's Waiting - Bananarama
Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
The Skye Boat Song - Traditional (Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape from the Battle of Culloden)

Shel,

I thought Suzi Q wasn't written by John Fogerty, though (I'm assuming you mean CCR by CCWR). And i'll have to look up who Suzi Quattro was. The name does not ring a bell!

Reiver- You piqued my interest with Nebraska. I didn't know what it was about prior. Now I don't feel so bad about posting a song about a serial killer. Thanks!

And who could ever forget Snoopy vs. The Red Baron by the Royal Guardsmen?

That's a tough one.....

Did anyone mention:

Candle in the Wind - Elton John - About Princess Di
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
Vincent - Don McClean - Vincent Van Gogh
Angel of Harlem - U2 - About Billie Holliday
When Smokey Sings - A.B.C - About Smokey Robinson
Pictures of Lily - The Who - About Lily Langtree
Suite: Judy blue eyes - CSN - About Judy Collins (I think)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd - About Syd Barret
Nightshift - Commodores - About Jackie Wilson & Marvin Gaye.
Pocahontas - Neil Young

Maybe I'll think of more.....

Great question Suzi!

J
