There have been rumors galore as to what a new iPad might offer, with most of the speculation being that the iPad 2 would be a minor tweak of the original iPad. It's not. In many ways, it's a complete re-envisioning of the product.
There are literally dozens of important new features which you'll hear about. I'll mention only the few that relate to guitar playing.
- Front- and rear-facing cameras will allow you to shoot your TG videos easily. You'll be able to see yourself on the iPad's large screen while you record.
- New A5 processor is twice as fast as previous A4 processor.
- One-third thinner than original iPad; now thinner than iPhone 4.
- Apple also releases an iPad version of Garage Band which will provide a full 8-track recording studio; virtual instruments will be included, plus you can plug in your guitar and a mic, then add a multitude of effects, if you want. Cost of iPad version of Garage Band? Five bucks.
A note about Garage Band: The Beatles recorded Sgt. Pepper in 4-track on a tape recorder that weighed over three hundred pounds and was the size of a washing machine. The new iPad 2 weighs 1.3 pounds and will (with Garage Band) offer a fully equipped 8-track studio with a storeroom full of instruments.
- Also announced is the iPad version of iMovie which will allow for complete editing of clips right on the iPad. Cost? Again, five bucks.
More to come ...
