Open D is not Dropped D, Willem.

Open D = D A D F# A D
Dropped D = D A D G B E

I mean open D.
I have Martin extra light light strings and find them much easier to play.

Hello dear guitarfriends.

Today i boucht for my self a new 12 string guitar.
I have playing on Yamaha APX 700 and CPX700,a Crafter,Ibanez and the Martin D12 X1 AE.
The Martin have a good sound, louder than the Yamaha APX or CPX.
Oke i know here are more people with a 12 string guitar, and my qwestion is over the G string.
That thin string is also tuning 1 octave higher than the normal G.
The man from the store tels me that the thinnist g is not a strong one.
What is the best way??? other tuning and a capo on the first posision???.

cheers..............From Holland Anton
Anton,

A common way to deal with this is to tune the guitar down 1 step (D G C F A D) then capo to the second fret to get back to standard pitch. Check out some of the early America videos where Gerry Beckley is doing this. This also keeps the dots on the neck in a more similar alignment to standard tuning, as opposed to going down 1/2 step and capoing to the first fret.

Cheers,

Neil

I have a 12 string and you are right, the octave G string is indeed very thin. I have broken a few while tuning. Since I prefer to stay in standard tuning I just keep a couple of extra G strings around and am very careful when tuning. Enjoy your new guitar !

Edit: Had to change this Anton As I got my knickers in a twist and wrote down the wrong notes. Note to self: coffee first, post later!
Sage advice from our leader Anton!
I chose 1 half step down as I could sing so many songs better (the key was better for my voice) without using a capo... and the capo does put quite a bit of wear and tear on 12 strings as you really have to clamp it down.

I used to break the G-string often but I haven't broken one in the last 3 years or so.

Oh forgot to mention most modern 12 string guitars these days are built to take the extra tension so not the same need to tune down. I have my 1995 Tak in Standard most of the time and carry a few extra G strings although I haven't actually broken any in years. Great guitar for playing some Blues.
