Hey Wiley keep up the good work with kicking the smoking habit my man! All power to you.

I found having an overhead mic really cool (until some low-life stole it!). I reckon a really solid base and boom is the way to go. On the other hand, having something you can move about easily has advantages as well.

Good luck with everything!

Wiley: Glad to hear about the eCigarette, and how it is working for you. Living here in California, I take for granted the smoker thing. For a while now, smoking has been banned in stores, bars, restaurants, etc.... My mom and dad smoked when I was little (that probably explains a lot). Both quit eventually. My dad, because the doctor told him to quit or die with his diabetes in the state it was in. My mom, because she wanted to and did it cold turkey in one day....amazing. When I go to Vegas from time to time, it always hits me like a sucker punch to walk into the casinos and see the smoke lingering around like the grim reaper.... :woohoo: I am not one to bitch and complain about it though. I know the smoke is there before I go and I choose to deal with it. I might even partake in a cigar or two whilst donating to the electrical bill there.... B) I was fortunate enough to get sick from cigarettes when I tried them.... ;) Never became a part of my life. I hope this continues to work for you and that you continue to notice the positive effects of it.... :)

I am looking forward to the posting of your studio build-out! As far as the mic stand, I am just getting into that part and don't have much to offer. I just baught a telescoping boom mic stand for $50 at my local store, and so far I love it. It is On Stage brand and suits my needs pretty well right now. Probably not what you are looking for. Keep us posted as this develops and let us know what you have garnered from your build-out.

Cheers

MJ

Congratulations on your success so far Wiley, I really hope you reach your non-smoking goal.

I have a portable mic stand with 3 legs which spread out almost flat to the floor but not quite. Nice and heavy, so stable. You do tend to trip over the feet at times but the portability is really important for me. ANd I always secure the mic with tape too... you are right, you don't want it hitting the floor!

Glad to hear of your success so far with stopping smoking, Wiley. Good luck with keeping it going.

I think with mic stands it's all a bit of a compromise. As you know - condenser mics are fairly heavy. By the time you add in a shock mount/reflection screen/pop screen etc then you're asking a lot of any mic stand to stay upright, especially once it's extended beyond a couple of feet. For me - the best solution is to counterweight the boom and I also know that sand bags are used to weigh down the legs - but these may not be great solutions for you if there are kids running about. The problem seems to be that, in order to prevent the stand from tipping, the base would have to be so heavy as to be not very practical - I'm sure one of our engineers could do the math!

Great to hear that is working for you so far. I am like you, been a smoker forever, extremely addicted, and it has taken its toll on my voice, my breathing and so forth. I am starting on Chantix next week and planning a target date of March 15th to quit. With Chantix you take the meds for a couple weeks while you still smoke and then quit while keeping on the meds. Wish me luck - I certainly wish you the best. And post a followup in a couple weeks because I may also try using the "eCig" along with the meds if it will help. Quitting drinking (3-1/2 years for me) was a piece of cake compared to this.

Good for you and hope you have much success with the quitting.
For mic stands, I have several. We have a few of the tripod bottom that we use in the band.
I have one that I have used about twenty years. Back in the late 90's I sang in local restaurants. A couple were outdoor gigs, where the wind (not to mention mosquitoes and other bugs) could cause problems. The stand is a round base. I unscrewed the base, slipped a 15 pound weight over the pole, then screwed the base back on. (The weight was from a set of barbells, the round kind with a center hole. It's black and barely noticeable.) The weight sits on the base at the bottom of the mic stand. When we play outdoors I always use that stand. Of course when an unsuspecting person goes to move it, they are surprised and say things like, "Damn, that's a heavy stand!" Well, THAT"S the POINT!!

So, one solution is to weight the bottom of a stand. It's still portable, though heavy, but very stable.

Good luck.

Yes I smoke too,,one packedge in two day's,, Think its all between the ears,,not doing it or try quitting it gives you the feel of missing something..''it taste so well after a caffee or dinner...when you have quit it and smell it from an other you alway's like the smell,,,its some where in your brain..

I really want to stop and when I think of burning one i stop the habbit to grip one and jump on my bike and make a round..

My stand is very heavy,, i think there is le(a)d in it.

W. .............Damn ciggarets
