Anyone have experience of being unable to barre, and then developing the ability? How long did it take? What did you do apart from playing?

Like you Shel my ring finger joint doesn't bend back at all, unlike all my other fingers annoying!
Dean,

I can tell you that I've been able to progress from a pathetic, almost non-existent hinge to an OK one using my first finger. I learned it for the Dm7 in Dust in the Wind. So it is possible to improve upon a bad one.

My pinky is actually the worst. I've tried it for Never Going Back Again, which I love, but my hinged pinky is so crappy and tight that even when I get it working, it often snaps out of position of its own accord. But,...I have faith that I might even be able to get it working too one day.

BTW - I'm finding that I'm bending the strings a bit too. But, given how far I am from playing anything with an A-shaped barre in it I guess that's just irrelevant for the moment.

Keep trying.

I'm currently spending time as the ant (and the rubber tree) or the little red engine, take your pick. Ow...that reminds me I have new tusq picks. :) all good so far.

Shel

I can't do a full 5 string A-form double bar either (5 strings = without the 6th string). The best I can do is to mute the 1st string with my microscopically hinged ring finger and play a 4 string form. Then, since I don't really need the entire index finger bar, I relax it and use it just to fret the 5th string.

Not very good technique, I know, but I tend to use it only with fairly heavy (for me) strumming, and then the lack of the 1st string ringing goes largely unnoticed (at least by me).

But I think I will try some of Michelle's finger exercises and see if they help. In fact I will ask my physiotherapist about them too--she is a hand/arm/shoulder specialist.

I guess I've just always avoided the double barred chord, either because it was too difficult or I was just ignorant of it.

Take, for example, the B chord, where you barre the 2nd fret, and half-barre the 4th (4,3,2,1 strings). I have always simply half-barred the 4th, and used the pinky on the 1st string/7th fret to the pinky on 1st string/5th fret (for B7). The same way I play an A chord in 2nd fret (4,3,2,1) with the pinky on 1st string/5th fret to 1st string/3rd fret for the A7.

Don't know if this is helpful.

Hmmmm.....I wish I could add something to the thread......but....

I just don't remember my own experiences with the A-barre-shape, it's too long ago. But I do think that I might have played it on an electrical guitar first. I don't think I had troubles with it either...

Hahaha!  :P You crack me up too Willem!

Buttuh....yeah Shel, I think your theory is right, young and supple. But I really wouldn't know the age, well at léast before I reached 10. And I only know that because I have this tape with recordings of my playing and I'm really sure that I played those A-barre-chords in those songs, that's about it. Yeah, I know, I was lucky, my dad taught me well! :P ;)

So Willem...you reckon Ness was rockin' out in her mum's belly? Well that WOULD explain a few things. :) B)
