What a great question. I love reading everyone's stories.
Like Ness, my parents bought me a ukelele, but I couldn't tune it and didn't really try. Then my mom borrowed a classical from someone and I took lessons with that for a few months. Mel Bay Guitar Method. The only song I learned was Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, but I did learn to read the notes on the Treble Clef, so that was good. Finally, Christmas 1968, I was ten, my mother bought me a steel string, sunburst no-name guitar from Sears. The headstock had all the tuners on one side, like an electric, so I thought that was cool. The action was terrible, of course. But I loved it, and practiced and practiced, my fingers hurt all the time. I don't know what happened to that one, but my mom continued to buy increasingly higher quality guitars as I progressed. I will always be both grateful and amazed that she managed that on a pitifully small salary, while supporting our family. Thanks, mom!
