Hi, I was thinking about buying one or the other. Which is better, or do they have different basic purposes? I am clueless on these except was leaning towards GP because a lot of the songs on TG have GP files.

You might actually want to consider getting both.

I highly recommend GPro, especially as all TG lessons include a GPro file. It will allow you to play against the written music while listening to it. It also allows you to loop sections you're working on, to change the tempo, to change the pitch and a bunch of other stuff. I find it invaluable. I mostly us the iPad version, which is great. You can also write files with it.

You can do similar things with Song surgeon, however, you can play against an actual track; as it the artist version of a song, rather than a computer generated track which is what you get with GPro. With the SongSurgeon program you don't play against written music. I don't have Song Surgeon. I use a different but similar program (on iMac and iPad); but as I understand it you can take a track you want to learn and then slow it down, change the pitch, loop sections, etc... All extremely valuable in learning new pieces and getting things up to speed.

I see that you already got some info there Larry (I assume that's your name?).

It really depends on what your personal goals are. As a TG-Target-member, which you are, I'd say, get a hold of Guitar Pro. Being able to play the files which are often attached to a lesson, is just really helpful as Michele pointed out.

Song Surgeon (or Video Surgeon) is indeed really helpful when you want to play along with the original artist (and not a computer track). But it is even more helpful when you want to figure out what they're playing, which is why Neil and I use it primarily. If that's your goal, you might wanna go for that.

If not, I'd say, get Guitar Pro.
