As we enjoy a warming trend here in Northern California (hoping it
will last awhile) I was intrigued by the Forum thread about people’s
first guitars. After talking a bit about this week’s new releases I
brought out a couple of my guitars. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the
first, a cheap nylon string junker made in Mexico that met with
a bit of children’s violence, but I still have my first good guitar which
you may have even seen in a few videos.

I also spoke about unusual chord progressions, playing one of my early
pieces designed to be a bit hard to follow, as well as a list of a
handful of songs that I consider essential study for all guitar
students. I’m sure you will recognize all of them and hopefully have
them mastered at this point.

The new content included Student Reviews on Neil Young’s Tell Me Why
and Stray Cat Strut by Brian Setzer (and of course The Stray Cats),
and we followed up Kevin’s Fly On The Wall lesson on Shady Grove with
a peek at how it was sounding a week later.

We also had two full song lessons, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman and Nick
Drake’s Time Has Told Me. I heavily recommend a documentary on Nick
called Under Review to anybody interested in finding more about him.
The videos includes commentary from a great bunch of legendary English
musicians, including Ralph McTell, John Renbourn, and Ashley Hutchings.

I hope you enjoy the recap and hope to be back next week,

Neil

Great guitar stories, Neil. I still like the look and the sound of that beautiful Santa Cruz guitar. I would have never have guessed that it is 30 years old.

Its funny how many people had guitars when they were young, but have no idea what happened to them. I too had a $40 department store electric guitar and amp, that vanished into thin air. I also had a Harmony 6 string electric that I tool lessons with for a couple of years, but that to vanished.

Neil, I was so hoping you'd tell us why the pick guard is gone from your Santa Cruz.

Scott-

Look more carefully, it is there but due to glue technology at the time the wood under it did not age like the rest of the top. These were still experimental days in many ways...

Was that Yamaha featured on the Judy lesson? If it was it sounded great.

Thanks for getting me obsessed with Nick Drake by the way, it's those things little side effects of being with TG that I love.
Can't wait to find out what's coming up from the Drake canon.

To my shame I didn't recognise the 3rd of the 5 guitar picking essentials, anyone?

Well I guess so. It's hard to see.

All I know is after I left your place when I was there, I went to a beach and a LOT of your California neighbors were taking a lot of things OFF. I just assumed your guitar fell into the "necked" catagory.
