On the Beat - Episode 228 - A Visit With Randy Black

Hi Everyone,
Neil had a visit with a friend of his and they discussed a bit about tuning.
Randy Black has been a friend of mine for many years. He is a piano tuner and technician by trade.
We recently struck up a conversation about tuning, guitars in particular, and I asked him to come by a little later when we could shoot our conversation, thinking some folks in the TG Community might be interested in what he had to say.
We spent about a half hour trading thoughts and comments on tuning.
Enjoy!

That was really neat Neil. I enjoyed his view. Another way of looking at something I thought was only one directional.
Thanks, Scott

So looking forward to more cos I wasnt counting them

Great info, Randy. Thanks for sharing. Now I am off to change my strings.
By the way, early frequency measurements were made using the ripples in water. An instrument was placed near a pan of water. After a note was played, the spacing (or interval) between the rings was measured.

Randy and Neil thanks for sharing the FOTW discussion.
I currently use an electronic tuner to tune my guitar.
I brought up the subject of tuning in the forums last week because I am
interested to understand how to tune my acoustic guitar by ear should I be without an electronic tuner.
That aside, I think it might discipline and fine tune the ear to recognise sound differences and how then
to adjust them to suit which can only be a good thing.
I am really interested to hear what you are willing to share and hope you explain
a practical method I could follow and
practice with an Acoustic guitar.
Hopefully before you may consider moving over to Totally Keyboards, you leave the Totally Guitars Community with
a solid method and understanding to tune our guitars by ear.
Thanks
Dermot

Nice intro to an interesting topic. I'd look forward to some more formal chats on intervals and counting beats.
Thank you.
