A week after Thanksgiving and I hope all is well with everybody in TG Land! Today’s News turned into a bit
of a lesson on pentatonic scales, partly due to Jay’s upload of Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And
Out.
In between a little Arlo Guthrie and the closing blues improvs I went over some of the new content we
released, commented on some Forum topics, relayed a little IGC news, and talked about the DVD set that
we brought out recently.

Of course, here in the United States it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without some Alice’s Restaurant, so that’s
how we got started today. Arlo then led me into some of the new lessons. We had Vanessa’s great take on
Don Henley’s The Boys Of Summer, a couple more installments of the instrumental approach to While My
Guitar Gently Weeps
, a strategy Fly On The Wall with Sandy going over using a capo and transposing to create
second guitar parts, and a theory Tip Of The Week emphasizing the importance of learning the natural notes
in first position on the guitar.

I was happy to see a couple new videos from students uploaded. I had a short response to Marc’s great
rendition of Eye In The Sky
, and was working on another for Jay’s experimenting with Pentatonic Scales
when I just decided to add that to the News today. So the last few minutes offers some thoughts on the
types of progressions that Pentatonics work well for, and the type where you need to bring in a few
additional notes.

I also want to commend our own Time Zone Zombies on another very enjoyable tune. I hope everybody
has seen their emoji song. It is impossible to watch and listen without a smile invading the scene.

Another thing I mentioned was that we recently started putting some of our lessons on DVDs. We have
gotten a lot of requests for this over the years but just were not able to work it into the picture until now.
We got rolling with some of the Target content on Strumming, Chords, Blues and Fingerpicking, and
included a new disc with some insights into common problems. Some of the musings on that disc include:
I Played It Better At Home!, Who Has Time To Practice?, and some goals and benchmarks for students at
various levels, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.

The last quick thing I want to bring up is that we are about 75% full with registrations for our California
International Guitar Camp
coming up at the end of August, 2016. If you are thinking of joining us it would
be good to get on board soon.

Till next week-

Stay Tuned & In Touch,

Neil

What a great news, you are in top form, thanks for the amazing lesson too.
Got my emojois  going !

Your DVD set looks impressive.
Being a long term Target member I chose not to purchase it but notice in the news
you explain that there is some additional material on it.
Is that material mainly targeted at total beginners?

Do you plan to make that additional material available to Target members as Pay Lessons ?

I still don't get your Tips of the week email, I'm not sure if they are intended for total beginners only.

Neil,

Gosh that's got to be some sort of record for the length of a news reel; at 19 plus minus it has to be right up there as one of the longest. Lots of useful info. thanks

And thanks for your fabulous comments on David's and my latest song. It's great to hear that this song and video chases Mr Scrooge away. I think we'll call that 'mission accomplished' for the happy song thing. :)

Hey Walt,

I thought a lot about this in the early days, and obviously now there are a few too many lessons at this point to redo all of them, but I'm pretty sure I mention fret numbers whenever I am up the neck. Let me know specifically where I may have overlooked it the next time you notice, or maybe you can steer me to some examples now. I certainly wouldn't mind redoing a few segments that might be problematic.

Thanks,

Neil

Fret Numbers
I've come across that overlooked Fret Number issue here and there too.
It's not been too often because I think when you became aware of it you
were more conscious to mention Fret Numbers in you conversation.

My Work Around
I Pause the lesson and use my mouse pointer to count the frets...... 3, 5, 7 etc....
I sometimes count back the way from Fret 12.
If your fingers are blocking view / odd camera angle, I refer to the Chord Breakdown Explanation lesson, It can help too if it's really vague (not often).

Measure Number
More an issue for me........ is when you are reading the Notation / Tab.
Sometimes you jump about in your lesson conversation which can break focus and concentration.

I always like when you structure to mention the Measure Numbers as you work through a song explanation.

It's odd because most guitars have the Fret Dots now, don't they ?
Is there a reason for not installing them when building a guitar ?

In my case it was how I wanted the guitar, much cleaner look.

P.S. You have probably seen my Santa Cruz Guitar, very cool art deco inlays in the neck.

It's a really nice guitar, you've got to treat yourself not everything is for TG folks too.
I guess you don't really need dots either as you know the fretboard inside out.

See like the banner was posted around the world   .....
