This week we had a couple lessons on songs that completely caught me off guard.
The first was It Won’t Be Long by The Beatles. I don’t remember how much of the
back story I went into in the lesson but I gave more of it regarding It Won’t Be
Long. As much as I think I’ve said enough about appreciating what they did to
music as we know it, another gem jumps out and surprises me with ingenuity and
creativity.

A similar thing happened with The First Cut Is The Deepest. Having not really heard
Cat Stevens version, I wrote it off as a mediocre tune. This was based on mostly
being familiar with Rod Stewart’s version. It would be akin to fixing the unbalanced
phrases and unusual progressions in Beatles songs. The song makes more sense,
and is much better overall in Cat’s version. Makes for a good little listening exercise
as well.

Thanks to everybody who got back to me with their thoughts on the Hippo Campus
listening challenge
. I went over most of the questions towards the end of today’s
rambling. In a nutshell, we had 2 chords in the key of Ab, with an opening lick
straight out of pentatonic pattern #2, the second guitar playing parallel octaves and
some major seventh chord voicings.

Most of you who got back to me did a pretty good job of deciphering it. I will have
another one in a few days.

Other than a little random improv at the end, that was about what happened today.
