I took up the bass while in high school, long, long ago, after several years of messing around on guitar, playing chords. I don't think I ever would have taken up lead playing, or advanced at all, if it weren't for that. As you note, it gives you the basis for navigating the guitar. I started by simply playing bass riffs on the high strings of the guitar. The attached Yardbirds song, "One Way Out" by the Allman Brothers, "Sunshine of Your Love," various CCR tunes. The tricky part, of course, was learning to work with the B string.

The downside for me was that my leads tended to be very scaly and basic. They still do, really, hard as I have tried to be more creative and work from chords and whatnot. I've made progress, but not a ton. Still, if it weren't for learning the bass early on, I might not still be playing at all. Scaly solos can be fun, after all.
